Access to education, water and healthcare has empowered an entire community in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Malaika’s community-driven approach is a model that can be replicated across the world.
Our Projects
School
The Malaika School provides free, accredited primary and secondary education to 430 girls.
Community Center
The Malaika Community Center provides over 5,000 youth and adults with training in literacy, farming skills, entrepreneurship and community-building sports initiatives.
Water & Health Projects
Our 30 new and refurbished wells provide access to clean water for over 35,000 people.
Extensive community-wide health programs raise awareness around deadly disease prevention.
Agriculture
Malaika grows all its own fruit and vegetables organically in its backyard, meaning that students and staff members are provided with two healthy meals each day.
Success Stories
“Malaika has supported me through my childhood and gave me the chance to have an education – a chance that a lot of my friends do not really have. Today I can read, write, and speak French. I can use a computer to type a text, do coding, and complete grammar exercises or math online. I spend half of my free time in the library reading. I always like to be at school because every day that I am there I learn a lot of things.”
“The Community Center has changed my life. I didn’t have the chance to go to school, but the center welcomed me with open arms, and my life depended on sport and learning French. Malaika made me become a confident girl, and one equipped to help other young people. The Divina that I am today is totally different from the one before the opening of the community center.”
“When I joined Malaika, I could neither read nor write in a foreign language. I was at home, doing nothing apart from housework. Most of the time, I was waiting for my husband to earn money to buy food for our children. After attending classes in Swahili and French literacy, sewing/embroidery, family planning, and financial literacy, I am now empowered and am helping my husband at home. I have formed a cooperative with my colleagues and the money we get from our workshop allows us to supply the needs of our families. I’m so grateful to Malaika for giving me such opportunities.”
