                Barry Segal

                Honoree

                Barry Segal is a successful New Jersey business entrepreneur who now focuses primarily on philanthropic projects. He has two charitable organizations: Focus for Health Foundation and Segal Family Foundation. Both foundations share the mandate to improve the lives of underprivileged individuals and communities, with an emphasis on vulnerable children and implementing sustainable change. Barry applies considerable business acumen to all of his philanthropic endeavors and is tenacious in his desire to increase awareness of the unique plights of the African continent. He has been a supporter of Malaika since the founding of the School.

                  Tina Buchan

                  Honoree

                  Tina Buchan is a Toronto-based philanthropist. She considers herself a “seed funder” and seeks to kick start grassroots projects in the healthcare and education sectors both in Canada and abroad. Tina and her family have funded numerous charitable initiatives in the DRC over the years and are longtime supporters of the Malaika School. Recently, a generous donation from the Buchan Family Foundation allowed for the construction of three new classrooms on the Malaika campus.

                    Proceeds of the night will go directly towards the completion of the Malaika School and to our Student Health Center, dedicated to our late student, 6-year-old Miriam.

                    The Student Health Center will be built in honor of Miriam, a beloved student who we lost to an undiagnosed disease in December 2015. She was 6 years old.

                    Syvain Koj Tshikut

                    Headmaster

                    Syvain Koj Tshikut is Headmaster at the Malaika School. He was born in Kasaji and is now living in Lubumbashi, where he studied Computer Science at the Superior Institute of Statistics (ISS). Sylvain has a passion for youth and music, and he plays many musical instruments (piano, keyboards, drums, etc.). In 2003, Sylvain and his family were living in Bunia, but fled to Aru (a Congolese border territory of Uganda) to take refuge from the war. Knowing personally the effects of war, he is passionate about investing in the eld of education to help the Congolese youth. He hopes to use his life experiences and education to make a positive difference in the lives of the girls at the Malaika School. He remembers the day that he received the call from Malaika announcing that he had been accepted as a teacher at the Malaika school, as one of the happiest of his life.

                      Sebastien Kikunguru Kimbele

                      Logistics Coordinator

                      Sebastien Kikunguru Kimbele, was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. He attended Lubumbashi University studying social sciences and graduated with a degree in Internal Relations. Sebastien believes that all people have difficulties, and that problems are common worldwide – in both developed and underdeveloped countries. He is always searching for ways to improve the lives of the people around him, and he is eager to use his education and experience to work for the betterment of his community. He is always ready to tackle any task, and he has been very involved in many Malaika projects. Currently, he is coordinating the ongoing construction and maintenance of the Malaika School.

                        Adrienne Kikunguru Leya

                        Sports Teacher

                        Adrienne Kikunguru Leya was born in Kolwezi in the Katanga Province. In July, 2012, she earned a diploma in General Pedagogy from Lubumbashi University, and she hopes to continue her studies in Pedagogy in the future. Adrienne’s interests include music, watching documentaries and practicing her volleyball and football skills to help keep her fit. She also enjoys the Sunday lectures at her church. Working with children is one of Adrienne’s passions, and she enjoys finding different ways to keep them active. Malaika is happy to have her teaching at both the Malaika School for Girls and at the Football for Hope Center.
